A fully differential switched?capacitor integrator based programmable resolution hybrid ADC architecture for biomedical applications

A novel switched-capacitor integrator based programmable resolution analog to digital converter (ADC) architecture is proposed. The proposed hybrid ADC can be switched between successive approximation register (SAR) and delta-sigma modulator (DSM) mode in 8-bit 15-bit resolution. mathematical relationship showing the effect of mismatch capacitors on linearity derived. fully differential folded cascode operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) operating a weak inversion region designed using gm/ID technique with unity gain bandwidth slew rate. OTA offers 83 dB DC gain. ADC, laid out UMC 180 nm standard CMOS technology, occupies an area 0.228 mm2. from 3-bit control bus (res[2 : 0]). operates SAR 11-bit resolutions as first-order DSM multi-bit quantizer 12-bit resolutions. dynamic performance verified through post-layout simulations supply voltage 1.8 V. It exhibits signal-to-noise distortion ratio 45–86 consumes power 0.86–98 ?W across target (8–15 bits).
